The dedication of these groups is centered on the vital preservation of their Tongva language and dance. Their work extends to educating others about the Tongva culture and traditions and powerfully providing visibility to their continued and enduring existence on their Ancestral Land. Their unwavering presence serves as a constant, living affirmation of the Gabrieleno Tongva legacy.
The Gabrieleno Tongva Dancers and the Gabrieleno San Gabriel Band of Mission Indian Singers represent the longest-standing group on their Traditional Territory, a commitment that has spanned over 30 years. They are a vibrant, multi-generational assembly, performing dances set to songs sung in the
Tongva language, a living expression of the First People of this land.
Their cultural visibility is a strong presence in the community, with performances seen across the region and notably at the annual Moompetam Festival, Gathering of the Saltwater People.
