We are the only Historical Gabrieleno Tribe having Immemorial History
Continued Disrepect of Flat Top Sacred Site
In solidarity with Gabrieleno/Tongva people, we are writing to express our deep concern regarding the ongoing violations at Flat Top, a sacred site that holds profound cultural, historical, and spiritual importance to the Gabrieleno/Tongva community and the neighborhood of Lincoln Heights.
Despite previous conversations and communications with the property owner and their legal representatives, we are now faced with even greater disregard for the sanctity of this site. Most recently, we have witnessed the installation of a large fence directly bisecting the sacred circle, followed by the introduction of guard dogs and an RV camper onto the land.
These actions not only desecrate the spiritual integrity of Flat Top but also create an environment of intimidation and exclusion, denying both the Tongva community and the broader public their right to access and honor this sacred place. Flat Top is recognized by the Native American Heritage Commission as a sacred site and is documented as such under AB 52.
For generations, the Gabrieleno/Tongva people have gathered here to connect with their ancestors, the elements, and the universe. Beyond its cultural and spiritual value, Flat Top is also a rare ecological and historical treasure for the entire Los Angeles community.
We call upon all parties involved to immediately halt any further development or activity that threatens the sanctity of
Flat Top and to engage in good faith toward a resolution that honors the site's recognized sacred and cultural status.
We stand firm in our solidarity with the Gabrieleno/Tongva people as original caretakers of this land. Flat Top must be protected, not fenced off, comodified, or desecrated.
Send a letter to Mayor Karen Bass, Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, and Principal City Planner Janet Choi.
